OMC MENTOR PROGRAM
The new member mentoring program’s purpose is to provide a system to give new members an experienced club contact(s) who will help with questions about the organization and activities.
Goals of Program
1. Help new members feel welcome and a part of the club
2. Elevate knowledge transfer through experience and wisdom gained from seasoned OMC members.
3. Create a process for regular and personal communication to new members. Commit to at least a year.
4. Provide feedback on areas of leadership, communication, interpersonal relationships and activities.
5. Engage new members and to encourage club volunteerism
6. Retain membership
7. Create a warm club environment that encourages fellowship
8. Build loyalty to Oklahoma Mustang Club
Benefits for Mentors
1. Info exchange that goes both ways that can aid in personal development for mentors.
2. Satisfaction of sharing expertise with others.
3. Builds member energy and enthusiasm
Mentor Responsibilities
- Contact new member as soon as possible after they join. Phone calls are best. Try to create a personal connection and good rapport.
- Ensure new member gets a copy of the “Club Owner’s Manual.”
- Get to know your mentee and build trust.
- Ask if you can connect with them via social media. Ask for their preferred way to communicate.
- Have them share how they got interested in Mustangs.
- Find out personal information about member if they are willing to share. It’s important not to be pushy or nosy and to keep information confidential.
- Be a good listener.
- Build trust by following through on what you have promised to the mentee.
- Sit with new member at activities like club meetings and after meeting dinners. Always greet then when you see them at activities.
- Have regular communication with new member and remind them of activities. Encourage them to attend and make sure they have all the information they need.
- Get feedback from member on activities of club. Notify leadership of any issues or help new member may need. Use good judgment on what you should share and not share.
- Keep all communications about club and club members positive.
- Keep confidences and ensure all personal interactions are appropriate.
- Every effort will be made to match the mentors and mentees based on personal interests and demographics. If there is a sense that the mentor relationship is not working let coordinator know so issues can be worked out and/or a new mentor can be assigned. Let the mentees know if they ever feel that a change needs to be made, they should communicate that to you or the mentor coordinator.
