Editor’s note: Through pure luck of the draw, Randy and I were paired up staging and parking cars at the Stampede show a few weeks ago. It became quickly evident that we shared much of the same Boss 302 DNA. When Randy conveyed the interesting circumstances behind his 2012 Boss, I asked him to put a paragraph or two together for the newsletter; I think you’ll agree he’s done a great job.
Better Late Than Never: Ever since I was seventeen years old and allowed a 69 Boss 302 in Bright Yellow slip through my hands I have always in the back of my mind wanted a Boss. There I was at the time looking at two muscle cars side by side at Hutson Brothers used car lot in West Monroe Louisiana, and unfortunately, I settled for the 1969 Camaro SS. I found out later who the boss really was.
The setting was D’Arbonne bridge every Friday and Saturday night at midnight. Three miles of straight blacktop highway. The starting line for the quarter mile was the lead edge of the bridge and a 50 MPH speed limit sign down the road was exactly a quarter mile away. All that to say this is where I realized what a Boss 302 was all about. I dreaded the nights that I had to line up with that yellow Boss because I learned quickly the race was over before it started.
From that day in 1971 I had been Fordless. And then, and oh no, Ford relaunches the Boss 302 in 2012. As luck would have it, I had just purchased a fully loaded Harley Davidson Limited. I knew Delores was not going to go along with another toy. Again, with a heavy heart the Boss slipped on by and the years rolled on.
Fast forward to the end of 2017 and my Boss fever was back in full force. I read everything I could get my hands on regarding the Boss and of course my nose was in YouTube. I started my search in the spring of 2018. I wanted the 2012 Boss being the last year of the old school Mustang look. Performance White with the black stripe combo was the one I was in search for. I found every color except white. Lo and behold in early August of 2018 a 2012 Performance White Boss 302 showed up at Fowler Dodge in Oklahoma City. I couldn’t get down to the dealership fast enough and trying to act as if I was mildly interested was difficult. I walked away and said I may be back with the wife. Delores and I went back and on August 8th, 2018 the rest became history. Needless to say, the Boss has exceeded all my expectations and 47 years later I can now say I own one!
Looking for an auto club to become a part of, we met Allen King at a car show and joined both the MCA and the OMC in November 2018. Our first OMC experience was bringing a side dish for the OMC Thanksgiving Dinner. OMC welcomed us with open arms and immediately Delores and I felt like part of the family. We have enjoyed the many activities such as Pony drives visiting several places in Oklahoma, car shows, cruise-ins, we even went to a baseball game, and an evening at Top Golf just to mention a few. Bottom line, there’s always something to do. The club’s support for ABLE and other fundraisers are commendable.
I will say owning a Mustang is owning a piece of history but being an OMC member enhances the experience and certainly makes it all that much more enjoyable.
Proud to be…OMC!!!
